Antonio Calma
Antonio Calma was exposed to the art scene and would pick up from early mentors Paco Gorospe and Roger San Miguel. Apprenticed under Vilco & Co artist Francisco Ello at his Malabon studio. Also worked as an assistant to Rafael Maniago of Angeles City. Taken in as an artist at Cesar Buenaventura for a period of ten years, becoming his greatest influence. Did etching work in Israel in 1979. While, there, mounted his first two solos at the Phil Embassy in Dissingdof. Would later own a small gallery in the early ‘80s located at the Flea Market across Fiesta Filipino on Dewey Blvd.
His paintings are featured at the Ateneo Art Gallery which showcased its new acquisition, “100 Paintings by Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan with Antonio Calma,” a gift to the museum by Security Bank Corporation in line with the bank’s 60th anniversary. Each of the canvases that make up the work is a portion of an enormous landscape painting by Calma that was cut up and framed by the Aquilizans. It’s one of several artistic products from their ongoing “Mabini Art Project,” an exploration into the genre of Mabini Art.
